Getting the Car Ready for Winter

In the cold and snowy conditions we have here in Scandinavia, it is generally advisable to store you older 911 during the winter months. At a minimum to reduce the impact of salt and slush from getting into all the exposed (hard-to-reach) rust prone areas on these cars. This is an example of the horror hiding on our cars.

Here are some recommendations and the process that we use when the car is going to be stored for the winter months:

  • Enjoy one last long run (this will be the last time you will drive the car for at least 4 months!) with injection cleaner in the tank, use the full tank if possible and then fill the tank again and add a fuel stabilizer.
  • Wash the car top and bottom (Including the wheel wells), clean the inside and treat leather with conditioner .
  • Dry car thoroughly, drive a few miles to dry out brakes and the bottom.
  • Put an extra 5 lbs. pressure in your tires, roll the car a little every week to avoid flat spots and prevent the brake pads to make a rust spot on the rotors
  • Park the car in the garage, and leave oil cap off during engine cooling (whilst you do the other storage steps) to expel hot air and moisture.
  • If you are parking on bare concrete, spread a poly sheet on the ground for you to park on.
  • Transmission in neutral and emergency brake off.
  • Make sure the heater valves (flapper boxes) are closed to prevent rodents from getting in.
  • Place an open box of baking soda in the car to keep it fresh smelling .
  • Trickle charger the battery, either in the car or on the bench.
  • Remember to put the oil cap back on!!!
  • Put 3-4 old comforters over the car - do not use a tarp or poly over the car as it traps moisture!
  • We do not start the engine during winter but crank it every two weeks with the CDI, and fuel pump, disconnected to circulate the oil.
  • Walk away and enjoy the skiing...
